Concrete launch food club thanks to £500 grant secured by Honeycomb Group

We're so excited to share that Concrete, our homelessness charity, has launched a food club for young people impacted by homelessness thanks to a £500 Tesco grant.

The grant, secured by our Group fundraising team, is part of Tesco's Community Grant Scheme, which encourages Tesco customers to vote for a local good cause with the supermarket's blue tokens.

Shoppers at our local Tesco Hanley chose Concrete to receive money, which will benefit their dedicated Young Person's Service. This operates at a 24/7 scheme in Hartshill and in flats across the community.

The service supports young people facing homelessness, including care leavers and unaccompanied asylum-seeking children. The team provides safe and comfortable accommodation alongside guidance with budgeting, wellbeing, training and work opportunities.

The new food club will be available to all young customers, with the team spending the grant money on essential food. This will give young people the chance to increase their cooking skills, learn how to make healthy meals from scratch and enjoy mealtimes together as a group.

Concrete Young Person's Operations Manager Anna Mather said: “We’re thrilled to have secured £500 from Tesco Community Grants. The whole team are so grateful to shoppers at Tesco Hanley for supporting our service with their blue tokens.

“The money will go towards a food club for customers at our young person’s service. The young people that we support have already been through a lot, even at such young ages. Some of them are care leavers, others are unaccompanied asylum-seeking children.

“Thanks to the support of initiatives like the Tesco Community Grants scheme, we can make sure that all of their essentials, like food, are covered. This means they can focus on starting new chapters and working towards confident futures.”

Tesco Community Grants is run in partnership with community charity Groundwork, who has awarded grants to thousands of local community projects every year. The Community Grants scheme – previously Tesco Bags of Help – has already provided over £100 million to more than 50,000 projects across Britain.

Claire de Silva, Tesco’s Head of Community, said: “Tesco Community Grants help support local good causes like Concrete and especially those projects supporting young people, those providing food, and local causes close to our colleagues’ hearts.”

Groundwork’s National Chief Executive, Graham Duxbury, added: “Tesco Community Grants continues to give local projects the boost they need to help their communities thrive. We are pleased to have been able to help so many local good causes over the years and look forward to seeing what community organisations can achieve in the future with the right resources.”
