Taking action on damp and mould: Honeycomb Group’s commitment

Property Team

Today, 27th October, Awaab’s Law comes into effect - setting clear legal standards for how quickly housing providers must act when serious issues such as damp, mould, or other health hazards are reported in homes.

At Honeycomb Group, we recognise the significance of this moment for our sector and the communities we serve. Awaab’s Law is more than a change in regulation - it’s a vital call to action to ensure that no one lives in conditions that put their health or wellbeing at risk.

Why this matters

Awaab’s Law is named after Awaab Ishak, a two-year-old who tragically died in 2020 after prolonged exposure to mould in his home. Despite repeated reports from his family, no action was taken in time.

His story was a powerful wake-up call for everyone involved in housing - a reminder that the systems, culture, and accountability within our sector must never allow something like this to happen again.

At Honeycomb Group, we believe everyone deserves to live in a safe, healthy home. That’s why we’re not waiting for the law to come into force to strengthen our approach - we’re already acting.

A Group-wide response

In preparation for Awaab’s Law, we’ve taken proactive steps across the Honeycomb Group family, including at Staffs Housing, to reinforce how we identify, respond to, and prevent damp and mould.

We’ve established a specialist Damp and Mould Team - a dedicated function responsible for ensuring compliance with the new standards and delivering fast, effective action when issues arise. This team includes two Property Surveyors focused on assessing and investigating damp and mould concerns and a dedicated Damp and Mould Coordinator, who works closely with our contractors and partners to ensure any required works are completed and issues fully resolved.

This specialist function represents our commitment to continuous improvement, transparency, and accountability - but it’s only part of the story.

Empowering everyone to play their part

Recognising that keeping homes safe is everyone’s responsibility, we’ve also launched an internal campaign to encourage all of our colleagues - not just those in housing or maintenance - to look out for signs of damp, mould, or potential hazards and report them to the right team.

By equipping member of the Honeycomb Group family to act, we’re adopting a culture of shared responsibility and vigilance that extends beyond compliance.

Our commitment

As a Group, we are proud to be part of the sector-wide effort to raise standards, strengthen responses, and put resident wellbeing first. We know this work is not just about fixing problems - it’s about building trust, protecting health, and making a lasting difference in the communities we serve.

We’re determined to play our part - together, as one Group - in ensuring that every home we provide is a safe, secure, and healthy place to live.
